The Do-Over

DJ AM with Skillz - June 22, 2008

It was with great sadness and shock that we heard of the passing of our friend Adam Goldstein, aka DJ AM. We were lucky enough to know Adam and we dedicate today’s Do-Over to him.

Last week he released his set from The Do-Over to the masses via his Twitter account. Friends have demanded we release it via the blog as it was one of his favorite sets as he played the music he loved:

REST IN POWER ADAM!

We all know what TGIF means but with do over around we are going to have change it to TGIS. Those who came to the garden of good vibes early had the chance to enjoy LotusPetal showed her true colors on the turntables. A-Ski followed by letting his green thumb cross the fader on some danceable vibes. Our good friend Expo showed us how a party can grow from the root down and Mr. Best sprinkled jumping beans into the audience with a high energy set of hip-hop. Just when you thought it was safe to leave the garden, enter Fatlip with a set full of fresh fertilizer to keep The Do-Over funky.  Hey Mesa took us on a moonlit stroll through our musical garden of eden when lo and behold, Eve walks in with DMX. Finally, DJ Bianca G closed out the night with a unexpected set that gave us one more reason to say Thank Goodness It’s Sunday.

This past Sunday at The Do-Over was full of so many surprises it was like Christmas in the middle of the Summertime.  Santa’s little helpers Danny Holloway and Bullion (UK) set the early vibes of the day with a blend of boogie, reggae and soul among other sounds.  Even Ian and Concise put some gifts under the tree filled with disco, funk, and hip hop.  As the sun was about to set, the Hip Hop sleigh stopped by to drop off Nick Catchdubs, who sent the party into a dancing frenzy.  Just when we thought all the gifts had been opened, Santa’s favorite golden-nozed reign-deer, Goldenchyld, brought the bay-area love to our popular so-cal soiree. Finally, Santa brought us a projector just in time for a video deejay set from Steve1der that made our feet move and kept our eyes glued to the screen.  Who needs an iPod for Christmas when you have The Do-Over every Sunday?

It’s difficult to explain in words the levels of epic that we experienced this past Sunday at The Do-Over. Perhaps it was the smiling faces, the sweaty bodies or the sheer excitement preceeding the mystery guests (whom only Haycock, Strong and Blacc knew before opening time). Regardless, we can easily say that the energy that all experienced this day goes into the record books as the most anticipated Do-Over in our 5 years of existence, while the anticipation proved itself ultimately worthy to the challenge.

Following the usual warm-ups from Strong and Haycock, our favorite substitute host Azul stepped in and brought the levels up after too long of a hiatus from our backyard boogiedown. Next up, local hero and Do-Over fave Rareform, kept it going uphill as the place officially reached sardines. The first jaw dropping moment of the day was when our man Rich Medina stepped in the place and dropped his record bag behind the decks. His set did nothing short of amaze the people. As the bodies were locked in perma-groove following Little Ricky, we decided to redesign the Do-Over thermometer as it got even hotter. Originally we we agreed that we could state before, during or after the next guest, but something fell thru and things changed (good thing for everyone). Getting on with it, A-Trak smashed it out of the park like we knew he would, and even went on to say “Do Over was suuuuper fun, best party in LA”. Finally, lets not fail to mention one of our newest favorite DJ’s, DJ mOma from NYC doing it perfect on the late shift. Nobody wanted to leave, even though the bartender should have cut them all off around 6pm.

What’s it going to be this week? Only we know and if you arrive early, you will find out…
