The Do-Over

Week Nineteen Recap (September 20, 2009)

As autumn arrives, the sangria goes down a bit differently. We can’t put our finger on it, perhaps it’s because of shorter days or the impending briskness. Regardless, it satisfies just as well as it did back in May. At least we still have a months worth of Sundays left to enjoy our burgundy fraught carafes before The Do-Over hiatus, which lasts until next May (with a couple special editions sprinkled in for good measure).
With that in mind, now is the time!

This past Sunday, we repped it a tad more uptempo and it felt right. Early disco and boogie from The Cosmic Kids set the mood for things to come. All the way from Brussels, Lefto brought the future sounds into Sake One, who drove down that day from the Bay for an exclusive appearance. One of the more exciting house masters to experience, Karizma, brought it in serious fashion. Last but not least, long time Do-Over regular and music professor, Jun, closed out the night just right.

This upcoming Sunday marks the annual Shirt-Over aka Hit+Run vs. Do-Over which will feature some exciting designs and music from some special birthday folks and artists involved in upcoming releases we have in the pipeline, not to mention a very major special guest. This is your one chance to get your very own Do-Over themed t-shirt. Mix n’ match designs to make it uniquely your own.
Free shirts to the first 100 people. ARRIVE EARLY!

Week Eighteen Recap (September 13, 2009)

Good times as always at our Sunday soiree in. Wiseacre started us off with a nice blend of now and then and a little bit of rare here and there. Benny Ben put the “D” in Do-Over with a high speed up-tempo set not unlike what our Detroit patrons say they would hear back home. The Beat Junkies came through for DJ Babu’s birthday and instituted the first Do-Over “Take Over” with party rocking sets by J.Rocc, Rhettmatic, and debut sets by Curse and Babu. John Arnold followed in suit by keeping the party hyped with some more hip hop and a bit of his hometown Detroit sound. Before it was time to go, Induce took us home with some funk, freestyle and disco.

If you know what The Do-Over is about, then you know you don’t wanna miss out. We are riding out this 2009 season with a STACKED lineup, each week.

Week Seventeen Recap (September 6, 2009)

Ain’t no party like a Labor Day / three-day weekend Do-Over! No work on Monday, a pleasant hangover from the previous two nights getting down and always a nice bit of heat in the air. The Do-Over faithful, realize the meaning of this… Get there early and expect for the worst if not!

This past Sunday was no different and actually much more insane than the previous Labor Day weekends we’ve celebrated at Cranes. However, Do-Over fanatics still told us stories of two to three hour waits in a never-ending line, though they did so with a look of relief since they had made it in, carafe of sangria in hand (many still trippin from seeing Nas and Beenie Man gettin’ turned away). One of the magic things about The Do-Over is that people actually forget about their experience in line once they cross the threshold of the patio, even if it’s just for a minute, once laying their eyes on the ruckus pile of bodies sliding and moving to the beats.

Hope y’all understand why the DJ’s for the day always get slipped in with no wait. Big ups to Chicus, Egon, Anonymous, Vikter Duplaix and Bloodbath. The stepped up and fueled the frenzy in ace form.

Remember folks, just because Labor Day has passed doesn’t mean we stop. It’s Los Angeles and if you actually think we are convinced summer is over, you best re-evaluate your opinion. We keep it moving and shaking until November 1st (The Boo-Over costume mandatory bash).

So…

Yes, every Sunday until November 1st.

Yes, we do play football.

Yes, do get there early…

and YES fellas, the ratio is still enforced.

Week Sixteen Recap (August 30, 2009)

It was with great sadness and shock when we learned of our friend Adam Goldstein’s (aka DJ AM) passing last Friday. We were lucky enough to know Adam as well as have him as a special guest last year so our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends. There’s an old saying ‘home is where the heart is’ and The Do-Over definitely felt like a homecoming with all of the friends and family in the house to show their heartfelt support for Adam as we dedicated the day to him. The energy and emotion was like no other.  Our special guests provided an incredible soundtrack for the day to uplift the spirits and celebrate life alongside the ones that matter most, your friends and family. Special thanks to Morse Code, DJ Nugget, Jerome Baker 3rd, Kutmah, Kogataroo and Mixmaster Noah.

We suggest reading dedications from his colleagues in the music / DJ world. He moved so many people and shaped what we have come to know as DJ’ing today. Check a list of dedications in our last post here.

All you really need to know about this Sunday is no work/school on Monday. Holiday Weekends mean we do it bigger and we do it better.
